Dartford Crossing Cost

Pre-pay account & annual pass: is it worth it?

Standard charge: £3.50. Pre-pay charge: £2.80. The 70p saving adds up fast for anyone crossing more than once a week. For Dartford and Thurrock residents, a £25/year pass beats both.

Working: 4 × 52 weeks = 208 crossings/year. Pre-pay break-even is immediate at any frequency. The pass beats pre-pay above ~9 crossings/year.

Break-even at common frequencies

Annual costs for a car at each frequency. Pre-pay always wins over PAYG. The £25 pass overtakes pre-pay above roughly 9 crossings a year, which makes it the right answer for almost every Dartford or Thurrock resident.

How to open a pre-pay account

About five minutes. You need a debit card, a number plate and an email address.

  1. 1

    Go to gov.uk/dart-charge

The official portal. Select 'Open a pre-pay account'. Don't use any other site.

  2. 2

    Create your account

Email, address, phone number. You will get a verification email.

  3. 3

    Add your vehicle(s)

Up to 20 number plates per account. Add all the vehicles that should get the discounted rate.

  4. 4

    Deposit £15 minimum

Pay by debit or credit card. Set up Direct Debit auto top-up if you cross often, so the balance never runs dry.

  5. 5

    Cross as normal

Charges are deducted automatically. You can review every crossing in the online portal or the app.

Three things that catch people out

  • Empty balance. If your account runs dry mid-month, the next crossing is charged at the standard rate, then refused entirely. Auto top-up by Direct Debit prevents this.
  • Card top-up takes 1-2 working days to clear, so it isn't instant. Don't leave it to the last minute.
  • Each vehicle by registration. If you change your number plate or buy a new car, update the account before crossing or the discounted rate won't apply.

Pre-pay questions
